The aim of this on-line course is to provide students with an overview of topics in Labor Economics and to take a closer look at empirical methods used in the literature. The course will combine slides that illustrate the main labor market models with case studies that will analyze individual research topics and papers. By the end of this course students will learn different aspects related to how labor market works, as well as how the empirical literature addresses relevant research questions related to the functioning of labor markets. In particular, this course will provide tools to learn and understand how wages and employment are determined in a perfectly competitive market, and how these dynamics change in frameworks that depart from perfect competition. Students will learn how labor market institutions work and how they have an impact on unemployment and wages. Students will also review topics related to how individual choose their optimal investment in education; how inflows and outflows of migrants affect wage and employment; and how gender and ethnic discrimination affect the labor markets.
