The aim of this on-line course is to provide students with an overview of topics in Labor Economics and to take a closer look at empirical methods used in the literature. The course will combine slides that illustrate the main labor market models with case studies that will analyze individual research topics and papers. By the end of this course students will learn different aspects related to how labor market works, as well as how the empirical literature addresses relevant research questions related to the functioning of labor markets. In particular, this course will provide tools to learn and understand how wages and employment are determined in a perfectly competitive market, and how these dynamics change in frameworks that depart from perfect competition. Students will learn how labor market institutions work and how they have an impact on unemployment and wages. Students will also review topics related to how individual choose their optimal investment in education; how inflows and outflows of migrants affect wage and employment; and how gender and ethnic discrimination affect the labor markets.

This course will introduce you to Game Theory provide you with tools to formally analyze both static and dynamic strategic interaction among economic agents with numerous applications to practical economic problems. Our focus will be on games of complete information — i.e., environments where all relevant elements of the interaction are known to all players involved. First, you will learn how to formally represent simultaneous moves games in strategic form and how to analyze them using the notions of dominant, dominated and mixed strategies, as well as the celebrated concept of Nash equilibrium. You will learn how to formally represent dynamic games in extensive form and how to analyze them through backward induction and using the notion of subgame perfection. Finally, you will learn how to analyze both finitely and infinitely repeated games and how to use them to investigate collusion. This course in Game Theory will provide you with more advanced tools that will allow you to formally analyze strategic interaction among economic agents in the presence of incomplete information — i.e., in environments where players are not aware of all relevant characteristics of the other players with whom they interact. First, you will learn how to formally represent static games in strategic form and how to analyze them using the concept of Bayesian Nash equilibrium. Second, you will learn how to apply these tools to the analysis of auctions. Specifically, you will learn: (i) the characteristics of different auction mechanisms and how to analyze bidders’ strategies in these different mechanisms; (ii) the celebrated Revenue Equivalence Theorem; (iii) the main elements that must be taken into account when designing an auction; (iv) the concepts of common values and the winner’s curse. Third, you will learn how to formally represent dynamic Bayesian games and how to analyze them using the notions of consistent beliefs and sequential rationality and the concept of Perfect Bayesian Nash equilibrium. You will also learn how to formalize signaling models, where an informed player sends a message that may affect the behavior of another uninformed player. Finally, will learn how to solve signaling models using the concepts of pooling and separating equilibria and how to use them to analyze the job market.This course is part of the Program “Market Analysis”, designed in collaboration with the Department of Economics and Statistics of the University of Naples Federico II.

The course will be aiming at providing you with a thorough understanding and operational knowledge of the mostly commonly used methods to identify and estimate causal effects in economics. Most economic questions are, by their own nature, causal (e.g., the effect of the introduction of a minimum wage on the labor market, the impact of the adoption of a fiscal policy to boost consumption, etc.).However, the data available to economists are, typically, non-experimental—i.e., they result from agents’ choices and market equilibria. Hence, identifying causal effects in economics poses specific challenges: correlation is not causation. The course will be designed so as to start by defining the concept of causality used throughout it and proceed by analyzing, both at the theoretical and applied level, different research designs and the corresponding econometric methods to identify causal effects: matching, regression, difference-in-differences, instrumental variables and regression discontinuity design.

Tools for data analysis

Tools for Data Analysis introduces elements of programming and statistical methods for data analysis and data science. You will learn how to use the R and Python programming languages—the most popular and in demand languages for data science—as well as shell scripting, to interact with data (visualization, manipulation), automate tasks (web scraping, file management) and deploy machine learning methods. The course is hands-on: students get to work on mini-projects and practical exercises throughout the lectures; theory of the methods is touched upon and references for self-study are provided. The course is aimed at students willing to acquire programming skills to work with data. Ideally, they have already taken statistics courses. People without such a background can still attend, but will require additional effort to assimilate the theory. Experienced analysts can still benefit from the course, by using it to transition to Python or R, or for a systematic review ofcommon techniques.
